I remember the first day I taught at Costaño. I was really nervous and I brought a small packet of theory materials outlining basic ideas like notes and rhythms. I didn't know what to expect; whether my student would be interested in playing or if she/he would hate it. To my surprise, my student was engaged and was eager to try out playing clarinet. And this experience continued for the rest of my time as a teacher with GM@C. Every Friday, I would be able to teach and have fun with my student. It made every 45 minute hell of traffic and honking during the commute to Costaño worth it. In addition, I've met so many other volunteers equally passionate about teaching music. Teaching at GM@C has taught me so much about music, forcing me to understand the very fundamentals in order to better explain them to students. It's helped me gain a deeper appreciation for teaching. Over the course of teaching 3 students, I've enjoyed every moment working with these kids. It's one thing to be in band playing music; it's an entirely different experience looking into the eyes of a student eager to learn from you. I may forget the academics and schoolwork that define high school, but there's no way I will forget my experience at GM@C. This year, I'm beyond grateful for the opportunity to lead GM@C. Being able to help improve the program has been an amazing experience. Coming with completely different expectations, I struggled in the beginning to organize and put my ideas into practice. With delayed deadlines and changing situations, it was difficult to move the program forward. But as time went on and as I began to really realize the dedication of every volunteer to GM@C and their willingness contribute, I began to find my footing. With programs like the inclusion of choir, GM@C Curriculum and more recruiting efforts on the new website and Facebook, I'm beyond happy for the progress made this year. For me, I hope that what I've done will help GM@C for years to come and direct the program in a bright future. Thank you to everyone who's made GM@C possible; from the volunteers, the parents, the administrators, and to the students. I sincerely hope to see GM@C grow and realize its full potential of contributing to music education. It's been an incredible 2 years, so thank you everyone! With love, Oscar Syu, 2015-2016 Co-Leader
